One man fishing hut
« on: Jul 24, 2009, 07:32 PM »
I have built two of these after seeing something similar out on the lake late this last winter.
Here it is from the side.

The front

Open from the back

And collapsed.

One from rear open

My youngest daughter is getting the other one with her name silk screened on the canvas.

Thank you. I built it from 1/2" baltic birch plywood with uhmw runners. I used one inch tubing for the frames and convertable top fabric for the cover. under the seat is storage for ice scoops, ice anchor and flasher. I also set it up with a rod holder on the right side (not in the pic.)It weighs in at 55lbs and pulls nice across the shop floor, the real test is this winter. My yongest was a little worried when she saw me post this as she thought I was selling it. I have in the past got a bug to build things like this to just turn around and sell them. I have the cover for hers at the print shop getting her name silk screened on it. I think she has the ice fishing bug worse than me.

Thank guys, this was my first time bending plywood. I like how it turned out and how much fun I had building it.
UP jigstick, I did some of it but majority of it was sewn by a friend. (he has a industrial sewing machine for upholstery work)

Ya, a industrial machine helps. I made something similar a few years ago and used cordura nylon pack cloth for the shell. It 's a heck of a lot nicer than just sittin on a bucket. Ya done yerself proud with those setups.

How did you attach the poles and come up with the lengths?   I have a similar sled set up and never could figure this part out.  Do you have a closer pic of this.   Once again Great Job!

First I knew didn't want a sled longer than 48" and wider that 34"and 12" high without the seat (the seat was a gift and added later ). These dimensions automaically mad the interior height right for me. It has a ceiling height of 53" and an overall length open of 7"10". If you have a shorter length sled you can use a bracket or brace to raise the ceiling tube to get the height that you need.
Here is a pic. from the side. I used 1/4" bolts with lock nuts. Going through the wood I inserted a steel sleeve. I found that 1/4" steel brake line worked the best and was easy to cut with a small tubing cutter.

Here you can see a small spacer that I used to keep the frame away from the side since I had made a peice that would help hold the fabric and finish the look.

here you can see that the frames were cut to a length that would allow them to lay on top of each other

Sawblade,
Great job sir I see you even included the state cowboy symbol. I have one suggestion drill holes in the rear or one hole one each side, put an eye-bolt through each hole. This will give you a place to attach ropes/straps to anchor the shelter to the ice.
I have family in Casper and know you get strong winds in Wyoming.

Anchoring is a very important consideration. There is no need for an unnecessary chase after a gust.

I thought of that. I built a grappling hook type of deal that would hook on to the edge of a hole and keep it in place.

There was a hilarious video post on this site last season (?) that shows about 20 one man shelters getting blown off the ice.

Sawblade I would still have the eyebolts on each side,my friend owns a Shappell Rover (similar to your sled but with plastic base ). He uses a length of rope and a boat anchor to keep it in place. This system worked  good until a gust of wind hit one side of the unoccupied shanty and flipped it onto the other side. This spilled the shanties contents onto the ice. Thankfully he did not damage or loose any gear. Grumpyoldman I agree it is fun to see until it is your shelter.
