Boat question
« on: Mar 24, 2009, 08:56 AM »
I'm starting to think Spring and am replacing the woden deck in my 14' open aluminum boat. I'm using Preasure treated plywood but don't realy want to cover it with carpet. Is there a paint that will stick to PT? I'll mix in some sand to keep it 'non-skid".

Go to a Local marine store and youll find marine grade paint you might have to prime it first ?   Boaters World has a ton or Hamiltons

Use the marine grade plywood, get at least a 5 ply. It is impregnated with resin that will help it last. Good idea on skipping the carpet, it stinks for fishing. There are many coatings that would work well.

Thanks guys. I didn't 'look before I leaped' and have already cut the floor, ribs and mountings for the seats out of PT. Now I'm doing the 'looking' and find that there's not alot out there for PT. :-\

do not use PT they have been putting copper in the pt for the last 5 years or so the copper will corrode the aluminum

yep .  PT will eat through aluminum and galvanized products in a couple of years.  need to use brass or stanless with it now.

Really don't use PT on an aluminum boat, I'm a builder and know it will eat through aluminum flashing in no time so definitely don't use it on your aluminum boat!

I'm in total agreement not to use the PT. I stinks that you are basically going to waste what you have already done but it will be cheaper than ruining your boat. Marine grade 5 ply is the only way to go. It will last a long time if you keep it dry and coat it regularly. Sorry...

I wouldn't use P/T for the splinters alone.

Some spray adhesive and a light coating of sand would be cheap..

If you have a company that sprays bedliners in pickups, have them shoot a coat of bedliner over your plywood. I'm going to have the whole inside of my boat shot with the stuff, a friend of mine had it done and it is def the way to go!

B4 my lay-off ,I worked in a Paint /Industrial Coatings supply house. What you are looking for is a product from California Paint (andover mass) called Tuff-quick . It`s an oil-based semi gloss paint available in whatever color you want mixed. Lobstermen in the area buy it to paint thier boatdecks and lobster bouys. I painted the bottom of my aluminum bassboat with it to seal up few leaks . Year 2 now -no wear other than beachin wear. You can mix non-skid additive to it (beach sand basically). Takes forever to dry , so plan properly or do it in the garage. Just make sure ya open all the doors and run a fan. Wearing a decent mask with filters is a good idea also. Have some paint thinner on hand for cleaning of tools and spills etc. Call your local paint dealers and find a California dealer. Buying "Marine " paint is a waste of cash. Ask the lobstermen, they luv the Tuff-Quick because it`s bullet proof and far cheaper than any paint labeled "marine".

Danka DasRottweiler, I picked up a gallon of the Benjamin Moore equivilant of the Tuff-quick Urethane base and plan to use it this weekend. I spoke to a guy at their factory and he confirmed what those Lobsta' Chasa's said.
Thanks again to all that took the time to give me your wonderful advise!! :)

i spanned the width of my 14' aluminum with advantech also. With no intermediate support it is a bit soft, but barley, i had planned on drilling a couple holes through the advantech and use spray foam to support, but didn't think it was necessary. I painted all sides with deck paint, the last coat on the top i covered with very fine sand. It has held up great for 2 yrs so far constantly outside.
