Icebreakers on the Kennebec
« on: Mar 23, 2009, 01:32 PM »
Any body know a good spot to view the icebreakers coming up the Kenne? I missed exactly when they are to begin. Just looking to kill some time. How far down is it froze?
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

BEE lives nearby and told me that once they go up the river, say goodbye to all the ice around Merrymeeting Bay and above. There goes my smelting! ;D

They were supposed to start today. no idea of times though, and yes the richmond bridge would be a great place to see them. Theyd go right under you. I would imagine you have two chances on their way up river and on the way back down

I was up that way a while ago and could see a lot of open water across from Bakers. It won't be long cause it's open for a long way. Still see a shack in the Richmond area I think.
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

They made it to Richmond today, and most likely headed back to Bath for the night. 7 ft. of ice may be a stretch, as the river ice has been pretty weak for a few days now. If I had to guess, they will head for Gardiner tomorrow, and should'nt have any problems. Most of the smelt shacks came off last week-end.

Just for those that do not know, these Coast Guard vessels, are really not ice breakers, but are vessels that have other primary
duties.  The have some limited abilities to break ice, but still must be careful of very thick ice which could damage there vessel.
The best way for the Coast Guard to break ice is to create a wake which breaks the ice, rather than plunging head on into it.
