Well 3 of us went up to East Grand this past weekend Me, MaineDukBlaster and Robbfishing (the awesome host)......well after a CRAZY Friday the 13th day....Rocky the Duck Dog ran off Thursday night at 8:30pm and wasn't found till 3:30 Friday afternoon...thought he was dead

.....Chris blew his serpinteen belt on his truck coming into Chelsea on Rt. 17 but luckily found a nice mecaniac to fix it....So we finally arrived in Orient around 7:30.....Got out fishing at around 8:00 Saturday morning and started the Cusk Slaughter.....Robb jigged about 13 before he even set a trap....Blaster and I were getting them on traps pretty regularly then brought the bait up a bit to get away from them.....thats when Blaster landed a nice togue.......Here are some pics from day one....

Here is video of Chris catching his first E-Grand Togue.....do to language here is the Short Version...PM if you wanna see the whole thing....

Finally after a LONG day of Jigging and Flags the Grand Total was 48 Cusk and 1 togue between 4 of us.....

Good Bye Saturday.....

Sunday we decided to hit the lake for the morning...leaving around noon....well the cusk were still there....and so were the Salmon....here is about 15 cusk before 11am.....

And Robb got the great job of fileting.....What a GREAT host....

Chris in a 100 feet of water gets this nice Salmon 10 feet under the ice....

It was a GREAT weekend on East Grand Lake.....weather was perfect and we caught some fish...weekend Fish Total was about 60 Cusk, One Togue and One Salmon.....and a BIG THUMBS UP to the Rubber Bands....about 99.8% hook ups......I am Hooked on Them for Sure!!!

On the way home I was aahhhhed by the site of these....

Nice pictures! Some of those cusk look pretty big. You picked an awesome weekend to make the trip up there.

Hay Thanks...the funny thing is...is that a woman not 2 miles away had him all night long and all day...seen that there was a Name and Number to call on his collar...but she said she just didn't get around to it....

That stinks, she probably wanted the company though, not to much going on up that way

She may have been in heat like her dog....I think Rocky smelt that female all the way from the lake....

Nice pics! You guys might want to check the law book regarding filleting fish on the ice. Unless you're eating them right away, it's illegal to alter a fish out on the ice. Just a heads up....check the rule book as sometimes my memory fails me on stuff like that.

The state says there are NO Cusk in E-Grand so I'm not worried...

Yeah.....kind of got into it with a warden up there about that. I tried to convince him that as long as a 1"x1" square of skin tissue of non-gamefish is left on the filet to identify it as a cusk, it is legal. However, with all gamefish fillets you must have in your possession as well, an intact carcass to verify length along with a piece of skin on the fillet for identification purposes.
Good to see you guys were at least eating them. It's been a little crazy up there with guys throwing them on the ice. I'm not one to preach about throwing them on the ice, but hundreds of fish in a weekend does look a bit much.
Good job with the cusk, and thanks for leaving those big togue for open water.

Yeah right....a guy came over right before we left looking for a Scale....he wanted to weigh 2 togue they just caught....he guessed they were around 10-13 pounds.....

was fun glad I was able to take the long trip from South Portland and manage a nice Togue and the Salmon.. only my second one through the ice..

You dont need to worry about hooksets if you are fishing for cusk. Your hook will be 3/4 of the way to the vent hole by the time you get to your flag.

This is another one of those gray area laws that the State of Maine is famous for. This is what the lawbook says:

Removal of heads and tails - species identification.
It is unlawful to alter the length of landlocked salmon, trout, lake trout, lake whitefish, and black bass unless the fish are being prepared for immediate cooking. It is unlawful to possess or transport fish dressed in such a manner that the species of fish cannot be identified, unless the fish are being prepared for immediate cooking (smoking does not constitute cooking).

The way I read it, you can't even filet them out when you gey home and put them in the freezer unless they can be identified. So anyone, including me is guilty if they have skinless fish filets in their freezer. Better be careful transporting those crappie filets to the banquet this year.

we were fishing for togue and salmon...with Live bait, but these cusks were pretty aggressive. I guess they had just come off the spawning areas, so they were pretty hungry. Most of the bellies were right full of Alewifes...

we were a mile down the pond from u guys. i drove right by ur shack at 8:30 or 9 in the red ford. I came down with the flu thursday night so i slept in saterday. i will post some pics later. it was an awesome weekend though. great weather. thoughs windmills were a great sight!
