WHAT DO YOU USE FOR PIKE LEADERS????
« on: Mar 14, 2009, 06:19 PM »
Heey fellow pike fishermen...

I traditionally use 12-15" steel leaders, but talked with a group of people this weekend that had 50 lb mono on all there traps. They said they have never lost a fish with this set up. I would be afraid of loosing big fish at the bottom of the hole.

Just wondering how many other people use monfiliment line for leaders???

I agree with livinbass, 20lb flouro P-line or seagar. Spend the extra money for these good manufactures and stay away from the cheap stuff. Haven't been cut off yet. Just make sure to re-tie after every pike landed.

No wire leader here either.  I use 20 lb P-Line but not the flourocarbon.........I'm too cheap.  I think the use of a wire leader really cuts down on the number of strikes you get.

I definately agree. Definately going to try some other things. All the pike fishing i've done, i've never thought of using anything else than a steel leader...

it all depends on the water you are fishing.  Some places it's so dark and muddy you can't see you bait after you put it down the hole.
enough is enough

Toothy Critter, made by Cortland Lines out of New York. It is the best!  It is 35lb braided stainless with a coating over it. It is amazing!  It is tie-able with any knot you like... Perfection Loop, Drooper loops, Cinch knots, etc. You would truly be amazed at how easy this stuff ties!

I like the tooth critter also . I have never fished pike ,But I do go for pickerel alot in the winter and summer . I have had those little things cut right through seagar 30lb floro . Also had tried 50lb braid on the summer and they cut it like scissors .  Steel is the only way to be sure . the toothy critter stuff is sweet and you can tie it like regular line . or with the coating on it you can just twist up a loop and melt it with a lighter and it wont break.

Sounds like the P-line and tie-able steel line are worth trying. Can't wait to try em' out. NO MORE STEEL!!  :cookoo:

Toothy Critter, made by Cortland Lines out of New York.

I use the Toothy Critter 20lb from Wallyworld and tie them up in a snell, whatever length I like , depending on the clarity of the water. that lets me use my hook of choice which is a 4/-6/0 gamakatzu circle or octopus circle in red.

this time of year, it's on sale for 3.50 / 10' length, if you can find the fishing clearance rack, (which they like to move every few days, in North Conway at least)

the little pike fishing i do i have used wire, mono, and pre made braided steel. the problem i have with mono is its memory, looks like a stretched out slinky going down the hole. i try to stretch but never seem to get it really straight.

i can assure you in sabbattus steal will not affect your catch rate at all...i have caught oodles of pike in there with steel. if the water is clear then id go with 35# or better flourocarbon leaders.

alot of people up here use 30lb. floro. for muskie due to our clear waters. ive used real light wire w/ good results but gonna give the floro a try. i think if you dont force them you'll be ok. trolling id still use wire.

started using steel leaders 12" long. fish are really sensitive to it so i made the big switch to 20-30lb stren superbraid. never been cut off.

I was thinking a 3 foot piece of hobby wick and a 1/4 stick would work great.
