rubber band technique?
« on: Mar 11, 2009, 07:21 AM »
i hear you guys talking about rubber bands on tip ups. was curious on how this works? wanted to try some big suckers for muskie and togue but the darn things pop the flag all the time. ive had to break thier backs w/ my knife to stop them from doing this. fin clipping doesnt even slow them down. any info is appreciated. pm me if you prefer. t.y.

Read oldbluu's post, gave me some good pointers and what size bands to use. I used circle hooks for Pike fishing and had flags all day but couldn't land one but if I had been using the bands I think I could of iced a bunch. Pretty cool technique ;)

Another trick is when you pull your flag out, dont pull it all the way out, only pull it out so you can still set your flag.

The bands won't stop a big bait from tripping the flag,it's just for hook setting.Try screwing a clothes pin to the bottom of your trap and placing your line in that.A big fish should be able to pop it right out,You could play around with a downrigger release too.

Put your fingers on their gill plates and squeeze just enough til they are barely dead and twitching ( make sure they are bleeding also ).   I leave them about 6 inches from the bottom.  Never set off my traps you can go as far as cutting there belly and sqwishing their are sacks and sending them down they still live but have a really hard time swimming and just flop on the bottom  ;)

use the drag on your heritage traps.  when i have big bait i just turn it in a little bit and that stops it from happening.  if you turn it up too much that is when the fish steal the bait.

the drag works ok till' you pull the trap to clean it then its too tight from ice buildup. esp. the cold we have up here. gave up on the drag a long time ago. ive treid clipping tails and fins then cutting the spine behind his top fin. that usually slows them down but forget using the sucker for another day.

i gotta try that rubber band method, i had alot of pickup and drops 2 weekends ago. if the sucker is seting the heritage trap off too frequently you can strenghten the set drag by turning the spring on the flag clockwise looking from the top. with more finicky biters turn it the other way so its just barely set.

Pay no attention to the holes with the broken rubber bands beside them..

Legal disclaimer before someone comments.............. ...There were actually no broken rubber bands left on the ice at East Grand last weekend, the mentioning of such was for entertainment purposes only and all rubber bands broken or un-broken were discarded in an appropriate manner.

They are very active right now. I jigged about 20 in 3 hours. Alot of them were up 10-20 feet off bottom too which is strange.

I used them for the first time this weekend as a hook setting tool while my wife and daughter were fishing with me.  I set some tipups near the pickerel beds and we went across the cove and I set some more for trout.  The rubber bands worked great and the pickerel didn't run out half the reel in the time it took us to walk to the traps.  Seemed to work well.
Whenever someone caught a fish...my Uncle David always shouted..."THROW IT BACK TO IT"S MOTHER!!"  I can hear that echoing across the frozen lake now!

I'm on to the rubber bands now to . I use the ones from the local sandwich shop . I just asked for a few at lunch and the girl handed me about 100 . I like these because they are the lightest I have found .  I loved them this past weekend for pickerel .  Lip hook is a good thing with the toothy critters .  about 90% hookup so far after a few weeks of testing . I started on them at the Sebago derby and haven't looked back . I've taken togue ,bass ,pickerel ,Yellow perch and brooktrout on them so far ..
