Jiffy v Strikemaster, Auger Race
« on: Feb 26, 2009, 11:04 PM »
So a friend of mine and I had a little contest this weekend...auger races.  It was my new Jiffy Legend Lightning Xt 2hp 8in against his older Strikemaster 2hp 10in.  He kicked the crap out of me.  His Strikemaster turns with a low torque and just powered down through that hole.  My Jiffy had sharp, sharp blades and I applied no pressure to it and actually had to back it off or it would grab to much and bog down.  The auger rotated much faster and it really took no effort to drill the holes, but I didn't like how it took longer to drill the holes.

Granted, he's got years of experience with his auger and I have about a month with mine, but I don't see the results changing ever.

Good thing we didn't have any cash on the line, or raced for the pink slips.

Maybe.  Bottom line, it starts and runs like a champ.  Something to be said for that.

I'm sure it was operator error.  I still wouldn't trade my Jiffy for a Strikemaster.  As bad as I was beat in that race, another buddy of mine has a Strikmaster that my Jiffy drills holes around.

I just bought a 8" 2HP Strikemaster Lazer Mag Express this year.  I also own a 8" Jiffy Model 30 3HP.  I have been using both of them this year.  I use the Lazer Mag when I have to pull it on my Fish traps (13 pounds lighter than the Jiffy!!) and use the Jiffy when I tip up fish by my permanent shack.  Both have new sharp blades and the Strikemaster "KICKS" the Jiffy!!!  I love both augers and can't bear to get rid of one.  They both play there parts in my ice fishing regimen.  Plus I love the roar of the Jiffy when it's cutting.  I think you can probably hear them five miles away!! :) :)  f-n-f

Well I am one for team Strikemaster, I have the Electra Lazer 12000 DP and I will trade it ...................... .....never. Second year for it and it is so noisy that sometimes you can hear someone close to you fishing saying, "He must be on bad ice there he didn't even start the Auger and it fell threw". Really thinking that some day the Icegator may get a tryout.
No gas to mix, spill or forget, drill anywhere from 3 to 30 holes in an outing.
May your tip-up spool while your flag raises with hopes of landing the big one.

My strikmaster 2000 mag isn't fast, I don't think. I see AND HEAR quite a few jiffy's and eskimo's blowing holes much faster than me. However, what my strikmaster is; is lite, easy to start (always), and user friendly on my 60 yr old body. But my bass boat is fast  ;)

The race I'm waiting too see is where they all line up and drill 100 holes each, non stop. Icegator would not even show up at that race if they were invited.

I'm just glad to have an auger that makes noise after I pull on a rope and I don't have to turn a handle to get it to turn.  ;)

i am gonna second that, very reliable, starts all the time, pretty quickand descent on gas! the only thing i would change if ever, is the size of the auger itself. i use the 10 inch jammy and have the 6 inch auger to change if needed. i would like to see a 12 inch to interchange.

Yea!  12" auger, that's what I'm waiting for.  As long as my 10" Jiffy purrs I'll be waiting.  Think I'll design a little header for that Jiffy 30 this summer, see if I can a little more performance/noise out of the old girl.  ;D

don't come to wisconsin with that 12 in thing, its against the law!!!! i gotta say strikemaster all the way. gotta be a lazer mag though. light, fast, reliable. my strikemaster has out run any auger that I have seen. one pull and its going like a champ, weather its -40f or 80f she goes. the best part is its one of the lightest 2 hp on the market. I can't say a bad thing about mine. thats just my two shinners worth!
thats the biggest smelt i've ever seen

Wi rules say holes up to 12 inches, but no larger. They do cut some huge holes for the sturgeon spearing season on lake winnibago.

So what is the "law" - exactly, in Wisconsin?  Just curious.  This one of the greatest debates - every year.   ;D
