homemade portable shanty
« on: Jan 23, 2009, 10:54 PM »
I'm almost done with this project, gotta add some windows and add a sled to it. Cost me under 50 $ to build it. Saved myself bunch of money rather then buying one. Gonna take it on ice on monday, can't wait. Anybody else got pics of homemade shanties?

Not bad for 50 bucks. Let us know how the pvc pipe holds up in the wind? The tarp may be a little noisey? How much does it weigh with the sled?  Is it a jet sled or one just like a fishtrap?

PVC may hold up, I'm a little leary of the duct tape holding the tarp together. Overall it's a great looking shelter! My first wooden shelter ended up as a deer blind after the runners froze into the ice. I use a Clam Jr. now.

Good point about freezing to the ice if you plan to just lay it flat on the ice, a couple runners lengthwise along the base well secured to the plywood that you could bop with a small maul to free the shelter would be a good idea. Also you could fab support poles that snap between the U frame supports for the tent just like the commercial flipovers. Measure,
cut and glue end cap fittings then buy spring steel U clips made for hanging mop and broom handles, screw to the ends, they will work perfectly and are dirt cheap and easy to find. I really like this do it yourself-er. I might put one together myself mounted to a small Otter sled that I have and use it on some of the walk on lakes I fish in Wis. and the UP. Gotta be lighter an easier to pull than my Fish Trap II, that bad dog weighs 82 lbs stripped bare and I'm not getting any younger. Thank you very much for the post and the pics, Great Job!

I used some glue before I put duct tape on. And this tarp is heavy duty so it's pretty thick, it shouldn't be too noisy out on the wind. It seems pretty sturdy when I shake it, but monday I'll testdrive it on ice.

One the first portable shanties I fished out of was homemade, we used conduit as it is fairly litght and pretty solid.  I cant remember what we used to attatch the tarp though I do know somehow we had some rope attatched to the tarp to snug it up.   The base was a drain pan that is used for under a furnace in atic installations.

They work well looks like a good idea you have

I've fished out of a few homemade shanties that were very similar to a two man Shappel, would love to get plans for one!!

I think you did a really nice job but 2 more little suggestions, Sewing supplies get some Velcro strips and cut them to length and position them to hold down the tent you could try pop rivets to attach them to the tarp and lastly you should have put the dark side of the tent on the outside of the shelter where it will absorb heat from the sun, maybe you can still turn it inside out?

I went out fishing two days in a row and shanty passed the test. I didn't have any good wind to see how it does but it nice, roomy and warm with a little lantern inside. Made windows and put runners on it- plows pretty good through the snow.

Kerry What did you use for windows? I think it's great you put together a nice rig for yourself without sinking a ton of dough into the project.

Im really glad it worked for you.  I fishe off the bucket for some time... Then got a shanty from my dad....Kiltman...that had to have been 20+ years old.  Canvas and conduit and tin aluminum sheeting.  Your tent is friggin awesome.

If I didnt have one now...I'd definitely build one like yours.

Good show bud.

i have been thinking about making the same thing.  one suggestion that isn't to late to do is add a set of skies to the bottom of it and you won't ever have to worry about draggin it.  one 6 ft 2x4 should be plenty to connect the skis to your plywood bottom.

I used thick clear plastic from old bed spread bag that I stole from my wife's closet and gorilla tape, as for the runners I think I'm gonna replace them...maybe with a pair of old skis or something better ??? these work fine if I drag it myself but if i'll have a chance to pull it with a 4 wheeler I'm gonna need to look more like a sled with a higher edge.

I wish I could do that, be nice to say that I built my own flip-over shelter.  Save some money too.
