* Currently, ice conditions on the bay are great, anywhere from 10 inches to two feet of ice exists, with 4-6 inches of snow/slush ice on top and the rest good clear ice. North of Houghton Point the ice is alot more sketchy. People are still walking out off the rivermouths, but that is about all. Boat traffic has resumed out of Bayfield, and travel here, or farther north is not advisable. With the predicted warmer temps, and rain next week, conditions will deteriorate rapidly. This is probably the last week for snowmobile or 4-wheeler travel on the bay, especially if we get the predicted weather. * The good news is that it's now the late ice period and fishing action has really picked up. Smelt are schooling in shallow water, especially off Washburn, where people are catching a mixed bag including Lakers, Browns, Splake, Perch, and Northern in 15 to 30 FOW. The Whitefish bite has picked up as well in the shallower water off Washburn, on waxies, wigglers and light tackle. Reports from off the river mouths include a few nice Steelhead, some Splake, Browns, and Menominee (Round Whitefish). The chanel north of the washburn coal dock has started to produce some nicer sized fish, especially lake trout. Action on the shallow side of the bay is picking up as well. From Ashland to Second Landing there has been some decent Perch action reported, some Walleyes, a few large Northern and a few mixed Trout. * The steelhead opener was slow, extremely cold water put a damper on the bite and the best action reported was, typically, from the lower stretches of the Brule. Increased runoff and warm temps will start things happening next week, IF it dosen't flood the rivers and make them unfishable. The best of the steelhead fishing is still several weeks ahead. * Inland lake fishing has really picked up for Bluegills and Crappies. Most fish are suspended, and moving towards the breaks near shallow water. On the smaller lakes the fish are suspended right below the ice. Still plenty of good ice on all inland lakes. http://www.outdoorallure.com

*Recent snowfalls have dumped several inches to almost a foot of snow on the ice, pockets of slush exist mainly near shore. The recent cold snap has skimmed over most areas north of Houghton point, to Bayfield and Red Cliff, however this is just skim ice and no-one should attempt travel on it. Snowmobiles are doing fine, 4WD Four wheelers, mindful of the slush pockets are doing o.k. also. There are still bogey holes of thinner ice throughout the bay (6-8 inches). A full size truck broke through (but didn't go down) near the end of the Oredock in Ashland last week. Vehicle travel is not recommended. Thick ice still exists along that imaginary line from Houghton Point up towards long island, (BUT not quite to long island) ,and back throughout the bay.
* Better fishing action is being reported in the deeper waters of the bay. Most anglers are fishing 35-55 FOW along the channel edges from the green buoy north, and from west end park north to Houghton Point. It's still a mixed bag affair with the majority of the catch being made up of Whitefish, and a few trout near bottom, We had a 14lb 15oz laker registered last week. Herring and Coho are still suspended near the top. If you are not catching fish, move to different depths and spots until you find them. In the shallower waters off Ashland, and nearshore Washburn the fishing has not picked up yet. There have been a few fish caught of the usual species, Smallmouth, Walleye, and Northern, but other than that the shallows are still full of undersized splake and little coho. The exception to this has been Second Landing east of Ashland where there has been some decent perch action reported, some undersized walleyes, and a few large northerns. We had a 16lber registered for our weekly contest yesterday.
* Inland lake fishing has become difficult with the slush resulting from recent snowfalls. Panfish action has been slow, but they will become active again soon, and action will heat up through the month of March

Last year we had over 150 kids. Hope to see you there. Here's the fishing report.
*We lost quite a bit of ice in the recent windstorms, the Sioux and Onion river areas have been wide open for a week. The ice still extends from Houghton point to Long Island and back throughout the bay with ice depth anywhere from 6 to 10 inches thick. The line of good ice however doesn't reach to long island anymore, it cuts along the east side of the channel, and swoops back over to Houghton point. Many pressure cracks are still present, Their condition changes daily. Caution is still highly recommended and vehicle travel (snowmobile or 4 wheeler) must be done with caution, especially when crossing cracks. Car or truck travel is NOT recommended, anywhere on the bay. Many anglers are launching off Thompson west end park, and the Washburn Coal Dock. Many anglers are getting out towards Houghton Point and the channel. There is still lots of open water north of Washburn off the river mouths and in the south channel area. Some anglers are breaking out the small boats for jigging, This is a highly productive method if the winds are right and let you get out to where the fish are. There is some shelf ice off Red Cliff, but it is rotten and travel , even by foot is not recommended.
* Reports have been mixed, with better action being reported in shallower water some days and deeper water others. If you are not catching fish, move to different depths until you find them. In shallow water Splake are the main fish being caught right now, along with a few Browns, Coho and Whitefish. The deeper water in the channel has been producing fewer fish of these same species along with a few Lake Trout , we had a 13 pound plus registered for our weekly contest last week. Herring and Coho's are suspended under the ice, and most consistently anglers are catching Whitefish right near the bottom.
* The Ashland side of the bay has a little more ice, and the muddy water has cleared up somewhat. Anglers are reporting Walleye, Northern, a few Smallmouth, and the occasional trout. Many anglers are still catching Coho and Splake on the Ashland side of the Bay. The majority are undersized (12-14 inches). Please be very careful with releasing these small fish. Replace your trebles with Circle hooks if you start getting into a bunch of small fish.
* Inland lake fishing continues to be fair. An average of 5-10 inches on most lakes. Some slush pockets due to the recent heavy snowfalls, but cold weather has solidified most. Panfish and Northern are biting well during the day, Walleye in the evenings over shallower (6-15 feet) water. Crappie anglers are reporting good success on overcast days, or at night for suspended fish.

* We had a new state record BURBOT caught out of Superior over the weekend. 18lbs, 2oz. 41/1/4" long, what a pig. It was caught on the thin ice off of Buffalo Bay marina, North of Bayfield by local angler Lewis Belanger. Look for pictures on the Photo Album page of our website soon.
Not much new to report in the way of ice conditions. The ice still extends from Houghton point to Long Island and back throughout the bay with ice depth anywhere from 6 to 10 inches thick. Many pressure cracks are present, but the recent cold temps have sealed them. Caution is still the word of the day and vehicle travel (snowmobile or 4 wheeler) must be done with caution. Many anglers are launching off the "S curve" area of Bono Creek, and the Washburn Coal Dock. A few anglers are getting out to Houghton Point and the channel. There is still open water north of Washburn and in the south channel area, so extreme caution must be used if fishing on the shelf ice north of Houghton Point. There is some shelf ice off Red Cliff, and walking anglers have made it out to 70 FOW for Lakers and Whitefish. There is thin, bad ice both north and south of Buffalo Bay so extreme caution must be used. In the past two weeks Three 4-wheelers and one snowmobile have fallen through both pressure cracks, and extremely thin ice that is covered with a few inches of snow. BE CAREFUL!
* Reports have been mixed, with better action being reported in shallower water some days and deeper water others. If you are not catching fish, move to different depths untill you find them. In shallow water Splake are the main fish being caught right now, along with a few larger Browns, Coho and Whitefish. * Chequamegon Bay is skimmed over with ice from Houghton Point to the tip of Long Island. A few people are picking at the edges in Ashland and Washburn and finding 2 - 3 inches of ice. Thickness is highly variable. The previously open middle of the Bay is skimmed over now, but very thin. Very few people have been fishing the Bay, and fishing reports have not been exceptional as there is not enough ice to get to the good fishing spots in the channel yet.
* Inland lake fishing has gotten good. An average of 4 - 6 inches on most lakes. Some slush pockets due to the recent heavy snowfalls. Panfish and Northern are biting well during the day, Walleye in the evenings over shallower (6-15 feet) water. http://www.outdoorallure.com

* Ice anglers are going to have to try their luck inland for at least through the holiday season. A little skim ice has been seen on the bay, but that's about it. Anglers in boats have been taking advantage of the warmer temps and vertical jiggers, using Lake Shiners and ice fishing techniques, have been catching Walleye and Northern off the Ashland Coal Dock, Marina, and Ore dock area. Washburn Jiggers have been catching Splake, with the occasional Walleye, Whitefish, Brown, and Lake Trout as well. Washburn Coal Dock anglers are also catching these same species using smelt on slip sinker rigs.
*Inland Ice has formed, but it is unsafe. There have been a few anglers picking their way onto some of the smaller ponds, and bays, but they are reporting large variations in ice thickness and hardness with the warm midday temperatures. They have been catching some Panfish and Northerns by day, a few Walleye on tip-ups at dusk, but Lifejackets, ice cleats, a rope, and a buddy are Mandatory for a safe trip right now. I would recommend waiting until this coming weekend, the forecast , if correct, should have four to six inches of ice on the smaller waters by the weekend, but don't assume it will be safe, take the precautions and check first.
