Jumbo Perch, other panfish, Nice Bass & Tiger Musky

SUBJECT    :Season Ends
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 07:18:27 02/25/2002
Well, the ice fishing season has for all intent ended with no safe ice on this lake all season. We experienced another winter that teased but never really came about. I can only hope that this helps the fishery as not to many perch were harvested. There should be even a better chance to catch that state record yellow perch from this lake next year. In the next few weeks my boat will be prepared for the coming season and getting out to many south eastern Pa lakes.

POSTED      : 06:22:12 01/05/2002
Current weather & 5 day forcast is not good. This lake might see another year that we never really get safe ice. I will keep tabs on it as time goes by.

REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 15:54:51 01/01/2002
This lake is nowhere near ready. The very back of the coves have a thin ice coat but it must get much colder around here for any safe conditions to exist. I will check again on Sunday but until then I am going to look north of here.

REPORTER : Billy
POSTED      : 08:06:44 01/01/2002
Len,

My buds and i are interested in fishing marsh creek but we do not know much about it and would like to know if you would be our eyes and ears. We have a group that drives pa. all over hell and back to find fish but fish mostly central and south central pa. This year would be our first venture this far east. Post and let me know how it looks. I will shoot you an e mail and we could maybe set up something off the board to hook up and fish together. Let me know what you think.

SUBJECT    :Marsh Creek location
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 19:27:26 12/30/2001
Marsh Creek Lake is a state park located in Chester county in the small town of Eagle. Probably the best for you is to take the Pa TurnPike west to the Downingtown exit. From there go north on Rt 100 about 1 mile to Eagle. Turn L at the Eagle tavern and take the very next R. That road will take you to the lake (about 1 mile) There are many access roads but the directions here will get you to the primary park location with pleanty of parking and access. There are 3 main coves that will freeze up first so just keep an eye here. I will check the area on Jan 2nd or before that. The perch are worth the trip!..........Len

REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 19:06:30 12/01/2001
As the fall season comes to an end at this lake I will say that I can't wait till the ice commeth! Marsh Creek Lake has produced good fishing all summer and fall. I have seen more muskie this year than ever. The largemouth seemed to be abundant and averaged larger than past years. Perch and crappie have taken up residence in their normal winter areas as indicated on my X-65. Let hope for cold weather, safe ice and hungry fish! I will continue my quest for the state record yellow perch here because there is no doubt in my mind that it swims in MARSH CREEK !

SUBJECT    :Season Ending Comment
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 06:06:26 03/03/2001
This ice fishing season started out pretty good. We had cold weather and hungry fish. As January faded the ice conditions became poor. Its been many years since we have had a season that allowed for safe ice till the end of February. Perhaps those days are gone. Marsh Creek, I am sure, holds a state record perch and perhaps a largemouth bass. The walleyes are scarce but a lunker or two, without a doubt, still roam the depths.
A tiger musky will still surprise you when you least expect it and on a regular basis in some areas. The lake has shown it can also support a few nice smallmouth and now has a good year class of crappies to fill your stringer in the spring.

I'll be uncovering the boat soon and look forward to some good "catch & release" fishing in this lake. The lunkers are here but ya can't catch em if you don't have your line in the water!

See Ya.....................Len

SUBJECT    :Nice Day On the Ice
REPORTER : PA C and R Guy
POSTED      : 14:58:19 01/29/2001
Spent the day at March Creek Sunday with not much action to speak of except for one JUMBO perch of about 13", and a lost bass at the hole...of around 20", maybe bigger!
Bites were not steady, ice is thick though...about 10" where I was.
Two guys said that the perch I caught was one of the biggest they had ever seen....it actually ate a shiner that I thought was more along the lines of a bass shiner...they're hungry...go get em'......
All perch were taken on tip-ups....jigging produced some small pan-fish...nothing special.

POSTED      : 14:36:35 01/13/2001
Wow, when I heard "Jumbo Perch", I din't know they meant JUMBO PERCH!

Only caught two but man were they nice. (so nice they came home with me)
My buddy lost a monster musky or bass, won't ever know, snapped 17lb test when he got wrapped up in a fallen tree 6 feet off the shore. I kinda feel sory for my friend, he won't be right for quite some time, I'm sure.
He got a nice bass (18") on the tip-up.(released)

Other then that....it was quite slow......

Can't wait to get down there again.

Might try for trout tonight at Scotts's Run.

Hey Len, you still hittin' the hard water or what?
Been looking for the reports. Keep them coming!

SUBJECT    :Fish bite and good ice!
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 16:26:40 01/05/2001
I found the ice in good shape today but in the coves only. The main lake is still open in many areas and the further up the coves you go the worse it gets. However, the main cove produced some really nice jumbo perch for myself and some others that were there at daybreak. Throw a crappie and sunnies in the bag also just for ballast. Anyway, the bite was on till the snow started around 10:30 or so and that was the end of the activity. I stayed till 4PM just cause my hut was warm and the snow was beautiful! Now to the fillet table for a dinner of Yellow Perch. Good Luck all!

Planning on hitting the lake on Friday. Hope to be able to reach some of my "honey holes" this time. Ice should be better. I will post report after outing....Keep em coming. Whoever is putting up the info on Scotts Run....good job and thanks for reading this also...

SUBJECT    :Marsh Creek 12/30/00
REPORTER : Van Cleaver
POSTED      : 07:55:02 01/02/2001

Fished from late morning to near dark in breezy, snowy conditions. Landed many bass; mostly chunky specimens- averaging about 15 inches. Tip-ups and shiners were the hot ticket; all the fish were released. The cove had five and one half inches of good clear ice and, the lake was iced clear across. My second great outing at this lake this season! Next time I'll spend more time looking for jumbo perch.

SUBJECT    :Yeah, I'm listening!
REPORTER : PA C & R Guy
POSTED      : 19:10:51 01/01/2001
Just waiting for the word from someone who knows...

My neighbor fishes there in the winter quite often and from the looks of some of those fish he brings home, I may have to give it a try.

I'm mostly a trout man, but a few crappy(not crappie)
outings on my fav. trout lakes may turn my attention elsewhere....if ya' know what I'm saying.....

SUBJECT    :First safe ice!
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 10:00:56 12/29/2000
This morning I was out to the lake...Still lots of open water. I was surprised to see that the areas that I fhought would be ok, were not! If your familiar with the lake...it looks like the back end of the coves hold good, black ice with thickness in the 3 to 5" range. I fished "Ranger's" cove and had some luck with panfish and others were catching nice bass in shallow water (6 to 8' deep)............With the approching major winter storm coming tomorrow the ice conditions will be unsafe and very treacherous......Hey, what the heck...I tried!.......Good fishing everyone.....By the way....IS ANYONE READING THIS ?

SUBJECT    :safe ice
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 05:23:37 12/28/2000
Reports are that the ice is safe. I am going out Friday and will give first hand results. For now the local tackle store has told me that "everyone is out there".
This lake has lots of easy access, close parking to the ice and nice structure in many areas.

SUBJECT    :Ice update
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 10:52:17 12/24/2000
Checked the ice conditions this morning. 80% of the lake is skimmed over. The main cove is showing signs of being ready by next week end. I am sure there is no safe ice at this time but the forcast seems to favor cold weather and I am now preparing for next week end to get after those jumbo perch!

SUBJECT    :Ice Conditions
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 07:21:12 12/22/2000
As of this date Marsh Creek Lake is still "ready" and waiting for the cold spell needed to freeze. A little ice still remains in back coves. Weather is cold but not quite cold enough. I sure got the ice fishin fever!

SUBJECT    :Ice update
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 15:25:33 12/07/2000
Today the back of the coves are showing a thin ice cover. The lake is just waiting for the first really cold and calm night to skim over. I wouldn't be surprised to see safe ice somewhere on one of the 3 main coves by Christmas.....more later....see ya.

SUBJECT    :Get ready
REPORTER : Len
POSTED      : 06:51:16 11/27/2000
Looking forward to a "normal" ice fishing season.
The perch are fantastic in this lake. EMail me for
locations, directions or whatever. Good Luck everyone and I will report on first ice!
