We have been fishing Stevens all winter long except
for last weekend, my buddies are going up tommorrow
but I have to go out of town for the weekend. The crappie and largemouth treated us pretty good this season, some bucketmouths almost 20". Thanks for the report,& pray for more cold weather. Can't wait to get home for next weekend, just hope the ice holds.

crappie hunter,
I left my options opened yesterday. Drove more than I fished...

Conditions (the outlook is bleak):

Niegro Pond: Some open water don't waste your time.
Jennings: Didn't bother looked bad.

Lake Carey: Didn't leave Rt 29. Open water and I saw a guy out there about 100 yds. from the open water. Won't catch me out there.

Lake Stephens: Yesterday was my 1st visit there. Got out on the ice as it was about 6" thick by the boat launch. As I went farther away from from the launch the ice got thinner (all the way down to 3"). When I got to the 3", I decided it was time to leave... Wouldn't recommend hitting here either.
In other words, I found no real good ice anywhere I stopped.

So, I headed to thw private lake in the Thornhurst area that my family has property on. (Yeah I have the fever and need the action and crazy to drive another 50mi to find ice). Spent about 4 hrs. actually fishing!!!! Nailed a perch for about 1 1/2hrs jigging and several on tipups. Probably the best (in terms of quality) this year. No worry with the ice as it was 9 to 12" of ice.

Sorry but conditions look bleak. Only suggestion would be to try lakes at the highest elevations (i.e. Lake Gene, or Poconos).

Slocum - While @ Lake Stevens a dude told me there was a 4 1/2" @ Slocum.

Moon Lake - On Tuesday while at the bait shop, the owner told me the Tournament (tomorrow) was still on.

Honestly, I don't think the ice will be getting much thicker than it is over the few days considering highs in the mid to low 40s every day...

If anyone has any reports please post!!!!!!!!!!

Lily Lake - No Safe Ice. I was able to walk on it but cracks with every step. Went out to where the ice "looked" a bit thicker but it is only about 2 1/2 to 3". Heading to Wyoming County tomorrow. There are a lot of options in that neck of the woods...

IF anyone who reads this is from NE Pa please post ice conditions.

Tribfisher,

In past years, I found that tipups with fatheads, 4lb leader, and set close to the bottom worked well on trout. Last year I would take tipups on every trip and the trout would keep you entertained when the jigging was slow. Since I purchased a flasher (MUST HAVE!!!) I try to stay more mobile and have left the tipups @ home more often than not. Other people I have talked to set the tipups from a few feet under the ice to the bottom for trout. I really don't target trout, but use light tackle for panfish. Last week while jigging for gills I caught a nice Brookie (around 14") on a rat finkie about 6 or 7 feet off the bottom in about 12 ft of water. I am really hoping I can get out there this weekend. The ice "should" be good enough to get on it by the weekend...

Any other ice condition reports out there???

I was at Lily about 2 hrs ago. Not too good and I couldn't get out on it. The ice melted out about 10 ft from shore last week. One step and through. It was frozen over on Saturday, so I would assume that it did not melt completely last week. I will be running up there Thursday for a look.

Also, was out in Thornhurst area yesterday. It was a bit tricky getting on the ice, but it was between 7" and 10". Picked up 10 nice perch. Private Lake.

Post in a few days unless I hear anything sooner.

Ice has made it through the last warm spell. Not sure if the ice will hold over the next 2 days, but there is a chance (wishful thinking). The last few nights have been colder than the local channels have reported. Hopefully we hit 32 the next few nights.

Yesterday during the day @ Lily Lake, the top 1" of ice honey-combed (it was white ice before it thawed) and about 4-6" of black ice under that but froze right back up within 2 hours after dark.

I will post an update Thursday or Friday on ice conditions.

Oh yeah fishing was slow...
