2-16-02 - Goatboys ventured out to the A-1 for what may have been the final trip for the 2002 season, baring any early ice come December (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!) We arrived shortly after seven and was happy to see other foolish anglers already out on the iceberg. After several minutes, I hesitantly crossed the 10’span of open water via the makeshift bridge consisting of a couple of 2 X 8’s and a pallet, and was happy to find there was about 4” of ice where someone had drilled a “test” hole. BJ and I proceeded to lug out our equipment piece-by-piece, and trekked across the pond to our favorite spot with the ice cracking as we went. Uneasy about the ice conditions, I nervously fired up the auger and drilled through the soft ice like it was butter, only to find the ice was a mere 2” thick… YIKES! Needless to say, BJ and I didn’t stick around! A 200lb Goatboy in boots and wool pants sinks pretty fast!
A bittersweet end to a short season…. GBDTM

First time on A-1 this Saturday. Very few of us ventured onto ice. 2-3" in most places. Everybody was off at 10:30am, a guy had to lend his extension ladder for us to get from ice back to shore. Lousy day for such dangerous fishing. 10 tip-ups in and only 2 small bass, 2 small pickerel. Nobody else caught much of anything. Lots of open water, be careful. Anywhere else fishing good? Cove on Chauncy and Hopkinton Res. have, ice any reports?

Goatboys made their first hard water trip of 2002 on the A-1. Although our favorite spot to fish was taken, we still managed to do OK. 24 fish between the two of us..... 2 perch, 5 pickerel, 17 bass (largest a little over 2lbs), 2 stumbles (1 with bait bucket in hand Doh!) and one flag-slap to the face.
We'll be back at em this Saturday. If you happen to be in the area.... stop by for a beer and some eats! GBDTM
