dont buy polar tip ups tip ups. I bought a few to try last year as they were supposed to to freeze up so bad. They still freeze up and you will have a terrible time getting them out as ther is no way to get at the spool with the hole coevered up. My personal favorite is the heritage laker tip ups. They are built solidly, will withstand some abuse and they hold plenty of line. |

Posted At 01:05:53 12/09/2001 Chuck, I don't understand your concern. If the hole is covered you need to uncover it, or chip it open. I've used the Polars and the Backwater imitation Polars and they both work fine. But I also will try the Heritage Laker since you've had better experiences with them. Thanks Bill |

Posted At 23:45:29 12/14/2001 I like Polar's the best. They rarely freeze up on me. They are just about all I use ice fishing. |

Posted At 12:20:44 12/25/2001 I have had a Polar tip up for a very long time. I don't use it a lot, but I have never cought a single fish on it. I could use a few tips on tip up fishing. Until then, I will jig. Thanks, HarryG |

Re: polar tip up (Currently 0 replies)
Posted At 12:26:21 12/28/2001 The biggest pike of my life fell to a Polar (27.7#). But I have three MAJOR beefs: 1. Flags come off, as someone mentioned. 2. They're prone to falling down a 10" hole. If a fish steams of at too severe of an angle, the entire rig can be lost. I avoid this by adding two sticks at right angles to the frame. 3. I'm forced to suspend a downrigger clip below the spool to keep large suckers and perch from tripping the flag. The notched portion of the spindle isn't very effective. And they do freeze in pretty badly! |

Posted At 22:28:49 12/30/2001 I see that people are having problems keeping flags on polars. After about 6 years my polars flags began coming off so went to k-mart and bought the GE silicone II household glue (small tube) in the hardware section, no problems since. Good fishing from South Dakota. |

Posted At 20:01:40 02/07/2002 Dave, I love polors and I usually put around 100 to 150 yards of 20lb. Ice fishing line then a weight after that a swivel followed by a 10lb mono leader than about 2 to 3 feet with a regular hook and a minnow(and they don't freeze that bad and if they do just get a hatchet and chip out the edge of the hole and you are good to go) |

Posted At 22:06:55 02/18/2002 Living in Alberta Canada (and fishing were it does get cold -40C=-40F )I've never had a problem with polar ice tip ups. Mind you I have an eight inch ice auger. But I know quite a few folks that have ten inch augers (no problems reported). When it does get cold going around and cleaning the holes every fifteen minutes or so is very important (when it is very cold or the snow is blowing, hole cleaning may need to be done more often). Times like these (when the holes need cleaning more)are the best times to bring along the wife and kids. Just kidding! |

Posted At 00:19:41 03/19/2002 last eason I found one of these units on the ice and gave it a try. I have expercnced all these problems (flag coming off, false hits from lively bait)the only thing Ihavent had a problem with is freeze up cause I havent used it since that day! To me they are more work than they are worth! If any one can give me any tips on how to rig the unit Ill gladly try again but till then I think the homemade tipups are still the best |
