If you're jigging walleye or lakers, always start by clunking your jig off the bottom. With lakers especially, flash, colour (sight feeding in general) are secondary triggers. Sound, vibration and scent are of far greater importance. The addition of livebait to the jig helps seal the deal at close range. Sound and vibration picked up on the lateral line brings the fish in. The best spoons for this are compact and heavy. Mr. Champs/Kastmasters, Crippled Herrings, Swedish Pimples, Rocker Minnows, Walleye Hawgers and leadheads are all good. You don't have to keep your spoon on the rocks, as fish in winter often suspend, but never start a new hole without ringin' the bell to start. |
