When jigging for walleyes it is best to use lures that mimic the available prime forage. If you are fishing a lake with a high shiner population use lures with a visible silver flash such as a Kastmaster or Sweedish Pimple. Tip these lures with a minnow head or small crappie minnow. Let the lure hit the ground, it tends to call in fish and also stirs up bottom content. Jig 12-18 inches off the bottom, if a fish is on the bottom, it will find it. Too many anglers think that you need to be hugged to the bottom but walleyes roam all over the water column so why limit your chances. Watch the reaction of the fish on your flasher or underwater camera and pinpoint the best presentation.
