I've had good luck using airplane jigs tipped with dead shiner,smelt,etc..I usually keep it within 5 ft of bottom and give two or three pumps and then let it settle.Large perch, pickerel, walleyes, musky and trout have fallen for this tactic.Hope it works for you! |

Posted At 07:32:10 12/06/2001 Paul I mostly caught my lakers on smelt-because this was the prevalent bait fish.I hooked the bait thru the mouth and out the top of the head.I jigged about 5 ft off bottom-using a slow pumping action.I would do this for maybe 10 seconds and let the jig settle. After maybe a minute or so I would repeat and it has worked for me!Good Luck, Doug |

Posted At 15:49:07 12/11/2001 I had a strange occurance with airplane jigs. I was fishing for pike with a smaller sized airplane jig tipped with the back end of a minnow. I was trying to catch some smaller pike for dinner when instead I went went home with a bucket of slab crappies. I never heard of this before but thought it was interesting. The lake was called Specticle Lake and is in Minnesota if you want to know. |

Posted At 12:04:46 12/30/2001 Had good luck in CO using sucker meat on airplane jigs. The lake had a no live bait reg., but the lake trout were O.K. with that. Did best by finding bottom, then a slow lift and drop. Most strikes came on the drop.(big surprise!) |
