I have pretty much given up on my rod and reel other than a line holder for handlining. Even during a hot bite, when the fish are aggressive, I've found that I can usually up my hook-ups significantly by getting off my chair, getting my face close to the hole and slowly swimming the line around the hole or slowly jigging. By watching the moving line I can detect visual strikes I would not normally see and by holding the line with bare hands I can feel them "breathe" on my jig/bait combo. I keep a handwarmer in each coat pocket and alternate jigging hands to keep my hands from freezing. Yeah, you'll look silly down that close to the ice but the people around you will quite laughing when you triple their catch. |
