Do you have to use jigs? If not use meal worms and power bait,preferably orange since it duplicates trout eggs and other colors work also. If you have to use jigs,I've had success with swedish pimples,krocodiles and traditional trout flies like woolyboogers. Trout are easy to catch. Fish mouths of bays during this time of the season, since most of these areas will have sandy bottoms and weed cover which attract spawning bows. Another thing to look for,is open water which has safe ice around it. This open water puts alot of disolved oxygen back into the water and attracts fish,even after the opening has frozen over,you'll still end up with higher concentrations of trout in the area. One lake I fish has an area which even in sustained sub zero weather still remains open. This area has a high concentration of small shrimp,which attracts alot of trout. |
