Panfish jigging

Hello fellas and ladies,
I've been reading your tips, and find myself thinking, "Hey, I never thought about this, or that. Great stuff! We've had a few too many thaws here to get back out just yet, but I was thinking about how my Grandad used to jig for perch and crappie in 30 feet of water. He'd lift the rod 2feet, jigging as he went, then at the top of that two feet, he'd lower the rod tip so there was no slack, first a foot, then lower it again until it rested a few inches off bottom. He jigged vertically for pike and walleye in open water on the edges of deep weedbeds in the summer and fall the same way. I asked him once if he had heard about vertical jigging, or read about it, and he replied no, that he'd just learned what they like ( the fish) on his own over a lifetime of fishing. On the days I fish for panfish, I almost always catch more than I used to just from using the technique he taught me. You might already be using one like it. If not, hope it helps!
