Hi Paul,
I would first make sure that the auger has "good spark".
You may have already checked it, but if not, remove the spark plug, re-attach it to the wire and rest the plug close to the hole where it can make contact with a good metal surface. Make sure the on/off switch is in the ON position and pull it a few times. You will have to look closely at the end of the plug, but you should see a small spark at the end of the plug. If not, you will need to replace the plug wire or maybe the coil. If you do see a spark you are in good shape. squirt a little gas/oil mix in the plug hole, replace the plug and wire and pull. if it fires, you may need to do this a couple of times. You should also get rid of that old gas in the tank and replace it with some fresh stuff. Most likely the old gas has gummed up the carburetor. A product called Sea Foam can be purchased at auto parts stores. follow the instructions n the can. this stuff works good for cleaning the carb. out.
