My wife bought me a Jiffy Model 30 ice auger with teflon coated chipper blade for Christmas. I was going to get a Strie Master. I was plannning on getting a 2hp because of the weight. I fish northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. I am looking for opionions on the make and models. Alo, are the new ultras too light? They don't feel like there is much there. Thanks.

I have a 2hp Strikemaster Lazer Mag. It works great as long as the blades don't become dull. They're impossible to sharpen with the hand sharpener they sell. An extra set of 8" blades cost approx. $25. Strikemaster will resharpen the blades for about $10 + your cost to ship to Strikemaster.

I have had only good experiences with Jiffy ice drills. My drill is 25 years old and I have never had a problem. The drill has fallen off of the sleigh at 10 MPH and rolled across the ice, fully submerged in 3 feet of water and it continues to run with minimal maintenance.

My first drill was a manual corkscrew in 1980, did not work well, I was told the shims were off. Returned it for a Jiffy Model 30 with a 9" blade and would purchase it again if I needed one. The first 10 years I was the only fisherman to have this expensive piece of equiptment, so it received a lot of abuse and never let me down here in Pennsylvania. (Going out now to check the local spots, if good I will borrow the spud bar or corkscrew for Saturday morning until the ice gets a good 5")

I have a Jiffy 30 and I were to do it over I would have got the 2hp model. I love the drill I just dont feel the power difference is worth the weight. I have heard the strike master drills holes faster than the jiffy because it shaves the ice (like a hand auger) and the jiffy chips ice, the draw back is how often you want to change blades or sharpen them.

I bought my jiffy model 30 back in 1979 and I have'nt had any trouble with it. I use it almost everyday to drill holes to put up decks, fences, mailboxs and flagpoles In the summer, In the winter I use it for icefishing. Only thing I do to keep it running is put in new plug and the right gas&oil mix. The Moose

I've used a Jiffy model 30 for 25+ years with no problems or failures. The only maint. has been a new plug each season. I fish just about every day. Bill

Got a Strikemaster 10", 3hp three years ago. Had problems with the clutch letting go which meant very slow, light-touch drilling. Didn't know this wasn't the norm. Strikemaster dealer finally admitted that there is a defect in the gearbox seals that allows oil/grease to contaminate the clutch surface if the drill is not sitting upright. Now have a Jiffy.

I bought a jiffy for $75 years ago. Have done absolutely nothing as far as maint. on it. Even left old gas in it (just changed the plug). Still goes strong.

Strike Master Lazer works far better than the Jiffy I had. I would choose the Strike Master.

I have had both, in 2 and 3 horse models and they both have their advantages. the strikemasters are a little lighter, and cut a little faster, but the blades get dull fairly quick with the amount of cutting i do. jiffys run forever, and just dont dull, and i have never had one fail in anyway for me. they are slightly heavier, however. Both brands are fine, as long as you drain the gas after every trip, check the spark plug occasionally, and are carefull with the blades. By the way, eskimo's are OK, but they have gearbox problems, and i personlly know of three that the engine has blown on. Their "shark" is supposedly the fastest auger on earth, and it is, but it is unreliable. The few seconds you save on cutting holes dont matter when the freakin' thing strips its main gear, or when the engine decideds to seize. i currently own a jiffy legend 3 horse, and it cuts very fast, and never ices up.

I have a 3hp eskimo with a 10in bit that is 10yrs old, no problems so far. When I bought it I figured bigger was better but that was'nt the case. I soon came to realize that the lighter 2hp models did the same job and you can be more mobile without have to lug this big heavy thing around. I went out and bought the strikemaster laser express with a 7in. bit and this thing is heaven on earth. Cuts fast and is much lighter. I dont think it matters which brand to much just as long as its lighter and runs good, always better than doing them by hand.

I have a Jiffy right now and i like it. i was thinking about getting the ESKIMO SHARK ice auger with its 11,500 rpm. it would cut throught ice quicker than hell. i was wondering if ESKIMO makes a good auger, or should i just stick with my jiffy.

I bought a iffy this year because it was a little cheaper than the strike master 10" three blade one. The same day I had an oppertunity too dril about 30 holes with each. All that I can say is that I sure am glad I bought a jiffy, it drills at a more constant pace and seems too keep going down faster. The big throttle handle on the strikemaster also seems too stick alot.

you americans are wimps , come to northern canada and dril some 7 foot holes then you will surely see which ice auger does the best, i prefer strike master!

I have a Strike Master now. Two years ago I bought a new one, took it back to Scheels because it didn't have enough power to drill a hole. Last year I bought another one. This one doesn't run very well either. I Plan on selling this one because I found it too expensive to replace the blades. The last set of blades I got lasted about 10 holes. I'm going back to the Jiffy.

personally, my 3hp, 10" Jiffy will outdrill ANY strikemaster that I have seen here in Northern Ontario. At least 2 holes to 1, and I'm not kidding! As far as everyone crying about the weight difference, if you are having trouble carrying your auger from hole to hole because it is too heavy-you should be lettin' Grandma carry it for you!!
